Best New Cars Under £10,000
We round up the best cars to buy for £10k or less
What are the best new cars under £10,000? From superminis to SUVS, the choice is vast and a £10,000 budget opens up a lot of new car options. Stay away from tempting options and you could find yourself driving away in a brand new car far less than £10k, or if you are able to find ex-demonstrators or pre-registered cars you could drive away in a lot more car for your money.
We’ve rounded up some of the best cars you can buy for £10,000 or less based on a range of factors including average review rating and what you’re getting for your money. There’s a surprising amount of choice out there meaning you don’t have to head straight for the used car classifieds, instead take some time to see just what you could be driving away in for £10k or less.
Renault Twingo – From £9,495
For less than £10,000 you could own a rear-engined, rear-wheel drive car. That’s the same recipe as a Porsche 911 that means ultra-fun handling and spritely performance. It may not be quite as quick or desirable as a Porsche 911, but the Renault Twingo is around one-eighth the cost.
If you want a supermini that’s big on fun for a small price, there is very little competition. With the engine in the back, there’s a lot more room for people and luggage space isn’t too badly effected either. It is strictly a four-seater but for a car this size the space is reasonable.
For this price you’ll be getting the entry-level ‘Expression’ model that may not get alloy wheels but does get LED daytime-running lights and a cradle for your smartphone. For less than £10,000 you will be getting one of the most chic little cars out there that is big on personality, reasonably big on space and affordable to own.
Dacia Duster – From £9,495
The Dacia phenomenon has been around for a few years now but it still remains one of the only manufacturers you can buy an SUV for less than £10,000. As long as you’re ok with what you’re getting, you could be one of the many Duster owners out there that have been extremely happy with their purchase. With such a low initial cost the depreciation will remain low meaning you lose less money throughout the overall ownership of the car.
The reason the Duster is so affordable is because it is very sparse on equipment, refinement and technology. £9,495 will get you the entry-level model that doesn’t come with much, not even a stereo. But what you do get is a spacious SUV for less than some city cars.
There have been a few quality issues with Dusters, even rust reported by some owners, but keep your sub-£10k SUV serviced and make your dealer aware of any problems as soon as you notice them and you could be enjoying the prestige of an SUV for the price of a supermini.
VW Up! – From £8,975
Own a Volkswagen for a lot less than you may have thought with the remarkably good VW up! With a budget of £10,000 you can even afford to ignore the entry-level ‘Take up!’ and head straight for the ‘Move up!’ that starts from £9,130. This gets you a mid-range model with air conditioning, body-coloured door handles and mirrors and a few other extras that mean you aren’t driving the cheapest model in the range.
The automotive press has been impressed with the up! praising it for the ride quality, efficiency, up-market cabin and the strong resale values. Alternatives like the SEAT Mii and Skoda Citigo may been cheaper still, but even thought they are built in the same factory the up! just nudges it overall.
It’s by no means comfortable on the motorway with the lower-powered 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine struggling to keep up with the demanding pace of long distance journeys, but a new Volkswagen for under £10,000 is worth a look.
Vauxhall Corsa – From £9,595
Skip the Viva, head straight for the Corsa and for less than £10,000 you’ll be enjoying a fine supermini for the price. The looks alone put it in a class above the rest with a youthful, sporty character and although the drive isn’t quite as inspiring, it’s a pleasant car to live with.
The latest Corsa is affordable, practical and well worth a place on any list. The range is diverse with most models leaning to the sportier side of things, but for this price you’ll be looking at the basic ‘Sting’. For your £9,595 you’ll still be receiving a generous specification that includes 16-inch alloy wheels painted in white, twin white stripes, white door mirrors, leather steering wheel and a six-speaking aux-in stereo.
The Corsa is popular for good reason and sits in the top five best selling cars in the UK. It’s spacious even for a three door and although not as dynamic to drive as some rivals, it still offers a comfortable driving position and supple ride quality.
Dacia Logan MCV – From £6,995
Another car for under £10,000 that isn’t a supermini; for under £7,000 you could get a very versatile estate that offers 1,518 litres of luggage space with the rear seats folded down. Plus if you budget for £10,000 you can skip the sparsely equipped entry-level model and go for the range-topping Laureate for just £9,795.
As with all Dacias, the quality may not feel as good when compared with rivals, the refinement may also feel a bit last generation and the efficiency may not be quite as you’d expect, but the Logan MCV is one of the most versatile cars you can buy new for less than £10,000.
It’s worth putting the extra money towards the range-topping Laureate model too for a few features you might exact to come as standard on cars these days, but just remember for around the same price as a Renault Twingo you’re buying a much bigger car.
